The Lifter Up of My Head ~ Psalm 3

Psalm 3

LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be who say of my soul, “There is no help for him in God.” Selah.
But You, O LORD, are a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill. Selah.
I laid me down and slept; I awakened; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for You have smitten all my enemies upon the cheek bone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongs unto the LORD: Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah.

The Lord is the lifter up of my head.

The image I see here is of a woman who is bowed down and sobbing out her brokenness. Then the Father tenderly reaches out His hand to her chin, lifting up her face to meet His gaze, and He says, “It’s okay. I’m here. And I love you more than you will ever know.” Instantly the tears stop and a peace warms her heart, restoring her joy. Hope swells as despair evaporates. Faith soars as doubts and fears fade from view.

I can picture this because I’ve experienced it. More than once. Sometimes it’s been a real hand, attached to a dear friend who allowed the love of God to pour through as a channel to my soul.

If you have such a friend, thank God for him or her every day. And if you can, be that friend to someone who needs you.
