The Shepherd

shepherd-and-sheepThe loving Shepherd walked among the sheep;
By name each one He called.
One lamb was missing—lying in a heap,
By angry wolf bemauled.

The wandering lamb, so helpless, weak, so dumb,
And so in need of care,
The gentle shepherd safely carried home
And tended to him there.

The Lord of glory that Good Shepherd is;
A lamb, I am secure, for I am His.

I was following a pattern when I wrote this, but I have no idea what the name of it is. Perhaps I’ll rediscover it as I dig deeper into poetic forms.

form: 2 quatrains and a couplet
rhyme scheme: abab cdcd ee
meter: alternating iambic pentameter with iambic trimeter in the quatrains; iambic pentameter in the couplet
